The currencies on Saint Martin Island

The official currencies are the US Dollar, the Dutch Caribbean Florin and the Euro. The US Dollar remains the most wide-spread currency. Note that some shops on the Dutch side accept Euros only in notes (no coins accepted) and other shops might give you the change in US Dollars (keep a check on the exchange rates). The Dutch Florin is systematically refused, even on the Dutch side.

All major credit cards are accepted on either sides of the island. You can find a large number of ATMs; some with US Dollars, some with Euros.

The opening timings for banks are generally from 8:00 am till 12 noon and from 2:00 pm till 4:00 pm.

Means of transport

Many mini-vans drive around the island all day long. The fares vary from 1 to 2 USD depending on the distance. Like the locals do, stand by the side of the road and wave at the vans passing by to stop them.

Hitch-hiking also works pretty well on the whole island.

If you wish to make your life easier, a good number of car rentals are available. Note that it is important to compare the prices between the various rentals.

As soon as you land on the island, taxi driver will propose their services. The cabs generally have no meter, start with agreeing on the fare with driver.

For higher standards, limousines are also available for rent on the island.

Bicycles and motorbikes rentals are also there, but beware of the traffic!

Driving is on the right hand side of the road and you may find only 3 traffic signals on the entire island. The condition of the roads is not always the best, beware of bumps and humps!
